New Study: The Parables of Jesus, Matthew 5:14-16

We concluded reading through the Psalms yesterday. For our next study, I'd like to read through the parables told by Jesus. Here's a concise introduction to Jesus' use of parables:

"The parables of Jesus make up a crucial part of the Bible. Jesus had the wisdom to simplify the profound spiritual truths he needed to share with humanity in the form of relatable stories that are easy to understand. A parable is a tale about a simple, common subject to illustrate a more profound, valuable moral lesson. The source definition of the word “parable” means a placement side by side for the purpose of comparison."

Many of the parables are quite brief. In others, Jesus gives us more to think about. We'll begin in the Gospel According to Matthew.

Matthew 5:14-16

14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven."
