Morning Bible Study: Luke 11:1-4

Here are 4 different translations for this passage, where the Lord's Prayer is recorded by Luke. Wording varies. Additionally, the New King James Version follows that found in Matthew 6:9-13.

The Model Prayer
11:1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us day by day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins,

For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.” NKJV

The Lord's Prayer

11:1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread,

and forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And lead us not into temptation.” ESV

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer

11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’” NIV

The Lord’s Prayer

11:1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “Whenever you pray, say,

Father, your name be honored as holy.

Your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves also forgive everyone

in debt to us.

And do not bring us into temptation.” CSB

Commentary

(the following is from Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary, 1706 -- www.christianity.com)

"'Lord, teach us to pray,' is a good prayer, and a very needful one, for Jesus Christ only can teach us, by his word and Spirit, how to pray. Lord, teach me what it is to pray; Lord, stir up and quicken me to the duty; Lord, direct me what to pray for; teach me what I should say. Christ taught them a prayer, much the same that he had given before in his sermon upon the mount. There are some differences in the words of the Lord's prayer in Matthew and in Luke, but they are of no moment. Let us in our requests, both for others and for ourselves, come to our heavenly Father, confiding in his power and goodness."

My notes:
  • The disciples were eager to learn directly from Jesus.
  • Jesus says "whenever you pray," --whenever-- there's a blueprint here to guide us. Exact wording isn't necessary, but a sequence or order. Worship of the Father comes before our own needs and wants. Honor the Father, pray for God's plan to be fulfilled, meet our needs, forgive us as we pledge to forgive others, and guide us along a righteous path.
