Morning Bible Study: Job 35:1-8

35:1 Then Elihu continued, saying:
Do you think it is just when you say,
“I am righteous before God”?
For you ask, “What does it profit you,
and what benefit comes to me, if I do not sin?”
I will answer you
and your friends with you.
Look at the heavens and see;
gaze at the clouds high above you.
If you sin, how does it affect God?
If you multiply your transgressions, what does it do to him?
If you are righteous, what do you give him,
or what does he receive from your hand?
Your wickedness affects a person like yourself,
and your righteousness, a son of man.

Commentary
(the following is from Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary, 1706 -- www.christianity.com)

"Elihu reproves Job for justifying himself more than God, and called his attention to the heavens. They are far above us, and God is far above them; how much then is he out of the reach, either of our sins or of our services!

We have no reason to complain if we have not what we expect, but should be thankful that we have better than we deserve."

Morning Bible Study: Job 34:31-37

31 Suppose someone says to God,
“I have endured my punishment;
I will no longer act wickedly.
32 Teach me what I cannot see;
if I have done wrong, I won’t do it again.”
33 Should God repay you on your terms
when you have rejected his?
You must choose, not I!
So declare what you know.
34 Reasonable men will say to me,
along with the wise men who hear me,
35 “Job speaks without knowledge;
his words are without insight.”
36 If only Job were tested to the limit,
because his answers are like those of wicked men.
37 For he adds rebellion to his sin;
he scornfully claps in our presence,
while multiplying his words against God.

Commentary
(the following is from Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary, 1706 -- www.christianity.com)

"Elihu directs Job to humble himself before God for his sins, and to accept the punishment. Also to pray to God to discover his sins to him. A good man is willing to know the worst of himself; particularly, under affliction, he desires to be told wherefore God contends with him. It is not enough to be sorry for our sins, but we must go and sin no more.

God is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works, Psalm 145:17. The believer says, Let my Savior, my wise and loving Lord, choose every thing for me. I am sure that will be wisest, and the best for his glory and my good."

Psalm 145:17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and faithful in all his acts.
